On Wednesday, New Orleans performer, educator, artist, storyteller and blues man Spencer Bohren spent the day at school. Spencer used his mastery of storytelling, skills as a musician/historian to hold our community in a blues infused spell. The 5-8 students enjoyed a 60 minute history of American music which traced the evolution of a single song from its conception as a slave chant all the way to Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones and beyond. Spencer combined pivotal elements of U. S. history with his own virtuoso guitar, banjo and lap steel playing to artistically illustrate the intertwined nature of art, history and culture. K-4 students were treated to a tour or Spencer’s unique collection of vintage American instruments. We were all amazed by this incredible performer.
