CTB Performance and New Units!
Highlights: Celebrate the Beat amazing performance! We also upped the structure of independent reading, and we started new writing and math units!
Wellness: CTB – what a great way for the kids to stretch themselves with an enrichment program. Tracy, Emma, and Tony T. provided inspirational dance instruction, and helped to encourage environmental awareness through their theme of “We Persist.”
Beaver visited with some of his friends, and together they performed a few skits for the Ks about being respectful during CTB rehearsals.
The 3-4 kiddos taught us about the Taking Time tool at All School Meeting on Friday.
Literacy: This week’s reading focus, aside from more phonics practice with word parts, was on partner reading during independent reading. Students reviewed the choices they have with partners: see-saw reading, echo reading, or choral reading. They also reviewed other fun activities and games to play with reading partners: book talk, find the snap word (or word part), power persistence, and “Guess what’s Next.” In writing we wrapped up How-To and started with Explorers’ Club! Explorers’ Club is when we choose an animal to research and write a book about. This weekend’s homework is part of the launching of this unit. Students did choose an animal on Friday, but they are welcome to change it for the interview. Here are the animals that have been chosen. If your K wants to switch animal topics up until they turn in the interview sheet, that’s fine. We would prefer to have only one child research a given animal.
Adina – horse Harrison – scorpion
Anya – panda Leo – leopard
Clementine – pig Steele – falcon
Lauren – panda Teddy – snake
Mila – elephant Will – eagle
Molly – polar bear Wyatt – snake
Mya – cheetah Wyatt Jay – blue whale
Violet – gorilla Wylder – eagle
Math: We started Unit 5! This chapter is about 3-D shapes. Please read more about it in this week’s homework folder. There is also a familiar activity for your child to complete.
Homework: Reading, Explorers’ Club Interview (please help your child with this – it’s brief, but needed for next week), math “3-D Shape Hunt” at home
Gratitude: Thank you Mila and Viktoria for the yummy fresh fruits, veggies, other snacks! Thank you CTB!!! Thank you families for supporting the show Wednesday night!
Snack King will be Will for the upcoming week of Feb. 3.
Snack Queen for the week of Feb. 10 will be Molly.
*We really do have plenty of chips. We still don’t need any more. Fresh fruit, veggies, hummus or a little allergen-free sweet would be perfect. Thanks!
First K Nordic ski morning will be Wednesday, Feb. 5 – Please have them wear or bring in ski socks that day, make sure they have a pair of sunglasses at school, and apply sunscreen to faces before school that morning. Parents are welcome to join, just let us know if you’d like to come with us. We will carry skis and poles out to the field in front of the gym and teach Ks about the equipment, and how to glide on the skis. Some of them will be able to walk up and ski down the little hill on the side of the field. We also will play a few games on the skis. We’ll start by 9:15 that morning and we’ll be back in the room by 11:30.
Next skating session for the Ks will be Wednesday, Feb. 5 at lunch – please send in skates and a helmet if your child would like to participate. They will be tired when they get home from school that day, but then they can rest until Monday!
