Gift Giving a Tremendous Success!

Highlights: This week centered on our gift giving program. On Tuesday after school, Krysten Madigan, Lindsay Halsey, and their cute kiddos worked to organize the numerous donations that we received. The next morning, the 5-8s helped the K 1-2s fill 107 bags, each containing a variety of donations. Krysten then delivered the bags, and several City Market gift cards, to the Family Visitor Center in Glenwood. Cindy pointed out that the donations delivered were the kind with which families are not allowed to use food stamps. So…soap, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrushes are VERY appreciated by the visitors to the center. This program was created by our dear Annie Teague. We are very happy to continue her tradition each year.

The culmination of the week was our beautiful Winter Celebration, in which our darling K-4s put on a show of winter musical numbers. THANK YOU for braving the elements and bringing your families to join us for this special event. The Ks brought the house down! Can’t wait for our scene in the musical in March…

We also had a successful assessment day. Thanks to parents for bringing in your children for this important day!

Wellness: Family Visitor Center program (balance tool), Winter Celebration (courage tool), and a visit by Beaver to review some of the tools in our kit (words tool, balance, courage, etc. Here are some more pix of courage, sharing on their days…

Literacy: We practiced more with stretching out longer words for reading and writing. We launched our How-To writing unit! This is the age appropriate unit for teaching informational writing to Ks.

Math: We started unit 4! From the Investigations website: The focus of this unit is on counting and representing sets of up to 15 objects, applying counting skills by using multiple units to measure and compare lengths, decomposing numbers in many different ways, and beginning to make sense of the operations of addition and subtraction. Students count as they measure and compare the lengths of shoes, strips of tape, and other objects. They act out story problems and play games that involve counting, comparing, and finding the total when a small amount is added or taken away. Students investigate combinations of numbers as they arrange tiles and explore different ways a set of two-color counters can land. They consider how notation can represent these situations.

Homework: Reading, handwriting practice with lower case letters r and n, math “Grab and Count” at home – front and back.

Gratitude: Thank you Wylder, Lindsay, and Garry for the yummy snacks! Thank you Veronica and Hilary for making our Winter Celebration and event to remember. Thank you Krysten, Lindsay, and all of the families who brought in donations and helped in any way with our Family Visitor Center gift giving project. Thank you parents for supporting your children, for making sure the get to school each day as well as for special events, even when the weather isn’t the best.

ALL School Read In/PJ Day will be from 10:30-11:50 on Wednesday, Dec. 18. It is also PJ day, so please encourage Ks to jump out of bed and come to school without changing out of PJs! The Read In starts with the meeting of multi-age small groups in assigned classrooms, followed by silent reading in the Central Area, followed by a special presentation by Casey! OH…please have your child bring a new favorite book for this day. It can be a holiday book, but doesn’t have to be.

Please see the calendar for new dates added, especially an evening performance for Celebrate the Beat, which is another AMAZING evening!!!
