The Aspen Community School is a public charter school of the Aspen Public School District. As a charter school, we are funded by the State and individual donations, charge no tuition (see sidebar), are non-discriminatory in admissions and provide an alternative within the public school framework.

Admissions Criteria and Lottery
Because there is greater demand for admissions than we have space for students, we use an annual lottery system to select students for enrollment. All students are eligible for the lottery once they have completed the admissions process below. Aspen School District residents receive priority in the lottery.

Enrollment is determined by availability and approximate gender balance. Class sizes are capped at 15 students for Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and 16 students for 3rd through 8th grades. Each student is entered into the lottery; there is no “first-come, first-served” waiting list.

The lottery deadline for the 2020-2021 school year is Friday, April 3, 2020. All applications received after the lottery are considered on a space-available basis.

Families are notified of the results by the Wednesday of the week following the lottery pull.

Admissions Process
To be eligible for admission, students and their parents must first take the following steps:

  1. Attend an Open House between January and the first week of April. The last Open House will be Wednesday, April 3rd, 8:30-9:30.
  2. Following the visit, determine if school is a good fit and decide to continue the application process.
