Building Community, Cross-Curricular learning and Supporting Others
On Thursday, The Kindergarten class sponsored the annual harvest El Tioga. For those new to our community El Tioga is the name we give when a learning center puts on a lunch for the entire school and uses the proceeds for a particular class project. The Harvest El Tioga is special because it combines many of the elements we hold sacred at ACS. Learning about what it takes to grow and prepare food, combined with reading and writing provides a rich theme. Then the community comes together. It’s about moms and dads, kids and teachers all pitching in. Finally, there is the act of helping someone else. In this case, families suffering from the devastating floods that swept the southern states and Caribbean. This is an example of learning that is deep, relevant and important.
