This next three weeks, the fifth through eighth grade students are learning about personal health and healthy choices. This time has previously been used to discuss and practice social interaction skills in mixed-age groups, but for this brief unit Garry will be teaching the 7th/8th grade boys, and Christina Lacroix will be teaching the 7th/8th grade girls in small groups. Our discussion topics will include:
- Puberty: Physical changes, hygiene, and brain development.
- Relationships: What is a good friend, setting boundaries, respecting others’ boundaries, and seeking help.
- Pitfalls: Information and misconceptions of drugs, alcohol, and technology.
We will be referencing articles from www.kidshealth.org, and will also have several guest presentations from experts in the field. This coming Friday, the program director from Response will present the following information on Healthy Relationships. We will keep you posted about information presented in class, for those who want to continue these conversations at home.
