Ask your child about…

  • Community share time: sharing one word to describe our day
  • Reading aloud Brighty for Doodle Book
  • Doing a science experiment with Dr. Bruce the Science Moose (scientific method)
  • Showing what we know about data, surveys, and sorting – 1st Grade
  • Math games: Power Towers, Kaboom, Egg Carton Math
  • Conducting surveys of 4th and 7th graders to find out how much time they spend in the sun and if they wear sunscreen – 2nd grade
  • Using iPads to research the importance of wearing sunscreen
  • Playing “I’ve got mail” to build community and have fun together
  • Role playing friendship skills and respecting personal space
  • Mindful Monday with Brad and Lisa: thinking and writing/drawing about developing understanding and compassion for others
  • Working with a partner to research interesting facts about the sun and share them with the class
  • Attending to precision by writing clearly and doing our best work
  • Using iPads to research missing topics for our “Sun Poster”
  • Opinion writing: thinking about something we feel strongly about and writing about it, sharing examples and evidence to support our opinion.
  • The Floss Rule – 1st grade (A spelling rule which teaches us that when words end with F, L, S or Z, you double the last letter. I.e. miss,will, buzz, puff)
  • The Consonant-LE rule – 2nd grade (When a word ends with _le, the consonant goes the le and becomes its own syllable. I.e. purple, mumble, settle)

Important Information:

  1. Field Trip THIS Monday to ACES and Ryno’s Arcade in Aspen! We will be leaving at 8:30am and returning by 2:30pm.  Please let us know if you would like to meet us there and we can provide you with directions.  Students need:
    • A packed lunch
    • A water bottle
    • Warm winter clothes, INCLUDING snow pants, jackets, boots, hats, and gloves.  We would hate to have your child miss out on our hike because of lack of warm clothing.
    • $1 – $5 donation towards group fund for arcade research – OPTIONAL
  2. TUESDAY: Please have your child bring in a small collection of theirs (or a picture-drawn is fine) of a collection they have.  We will be using our collections for the beginning of our opinion writing unit.  Examples: small rock collection, Lego collection, keychain collection, stick collection, sticker collection…
  3. ACES snowshoe trip will be on Monday, February 12. We will leave at 8:30 am, arrive at the Gondola Plaza at 9:30, return to the Plaza at 1:30 and be back at school at 2:30. We are asking for each student to bring $10 to Students should wear warm winter clothing and boots, hats and mittens, and bring an extra pair of warm socks. We will be outdoors regardless of the weather. Students should bring a packed lunch and water bottle.  If students or chaperones have full ski passes they can use them without impacting their ability to use them in the future, so please bring passes if you have them. ACES will provide gondola foot passes for anyone who needs one. Let us know if you would like to chaperone.
  4. The 100th day of school is fast approaching!  This year it falls on Tuesday, February 20th. We are asking students to create a 100th day of school project at home.  They will gather 100 objects to represent 100 days. More information will come home in next week’s Friday folder.
  5. We are gearing up for All School Ski Day at Buttermilk on Friday, February 9th.  More information came home in this week’s Friday folder.  Please complete the Ski Day Info sheet, Rental, and Lesson form (if needed) and return it to us on Monday.
  6. Our 1st/2nd Grade Learning Center is collaborating with the 1st/2nd Grade Learning Center at Aspen Community School to host the CRAFT BOOTH at the Hoedown on Saturday, February 17th!  We will be looking for both student and parent volunteers to work the booth for ½ hour to 1 hour shifts.  Please let us know if you are interested!
