June 2018 Letter to Families

Dear CCS Families,

I hope your summer is off to a tremendous start! CCS staff closed out the year with conferences, report writing,
Wilderness First Aid training, and some forced fun in the form of a rafting trip down to Two Rivers. It was a
great school year. Yet, we are already looking forward to welcoming you back for the 2018-2019 school year.

Reports
Enclosed are reports of your child’s achievement and progress over the course of the 2017-2018. We encourage
you to review the reports with your child and to discuss your child’s growth in academics, social-emotional,
outdoor education, art, PE, and Spanish. Don’t forget to look at the specific artifacts students have placed in
portfolios to reflect their learning. All kids should be proud of their progress – as we are!

Important Beginning of Year Information

School starts for students in grades 1-8 on Monday, August 27. Kindergarteners will start Tuesday,
September 4th. School starts promptly at 8:10 am. We will have a teacher on duty outside from 8:00-8:10 am.
Students arriving late must check in with Sandra at the front desk. We begin each week with a morning of
mindfulness and expect all students to arrive on time. Students are dismissed at 3:00 pm. The bus departs at
3:08 pm. We ask parents to pick up their children no later than 3:15. We cannot guarantee that a staff member
will be present to provide supervision later than 3:15 pm.

This year, we are going to host our back to school night early in the year for two reasons. The first reason, is to
provide parents with the necessary information to embark on a well-informed and successful school year (like
fall outdoor education trips, classroom expectations, etc). The second reason is to enable learning center
families to get to know one another. Please plan on attending the 2018-2019 Back-To-School Night on
Wednesday, August 29th from 6:30-7:30pm. This is a parent only event, so please make arrangements for
childcare in advance.

All families are also invited to a Family Potluck on September 5th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. This is a slight
change from years past. CCS staff discussed how to make this annual tradition more inviting and fun for
everyone and decided that the potluck should follow Back To School Night so new and returning families have
a chance to connect with fellow learning center families, friends, and staff. Please bring the whole family and
either a main course, salad, side dish, or dessert to share. CCS will provide compostable dinnerware and drinks.

Lunch
An El Tioga lunch will be served every Friday starting at 12:10 pm. The cost is $5 per person. We welcome
families and friends. The menu will be posted at school by Wednesday. We will also email the menu to you
mid-week. These lunches are a fundraising opportunity for learning centers to support their outdoor trips and to
enhance classroom resources. Thanks to all parents who help to make these lunches happen. We couldn’t do it
without your support.

We also provide “hot lunch” Mondays through Thursdays. These satellite lunches are provided by the
school district and are picked up at the Carbondale Middle School at 11:30 am and then transported to CCS.
These lunches are available to all students, but you must pay for them in advance each month. Lunch prices are
as follows: Full Pay: K-5 ($3.25/lunch); 6-8 ($3.75/lunch); Reduced: K-2 (free); 3-8 ($0.40/lunch). To apply
for assistance, please contact Sandra to request a Free and Reduced Lunch form. Free and Reduced Lunch
forms will be available for CCS families starting August 20th. You can access the lunch program and menu at
www.rfsd.org . We will be following the middle school lunch menu and we start serving lunches on Tuesday,
September 4th.

Bus Schedule
A schedule is enclosed for the first two weeks of school. A revised schedule will be sent home after school
starts. We are allowed to a run a route through Carbondale only. We do not provide door-to-door service, but
will work with families to find a convenient and safe pick up and drop off spot. The stop at Carbondale Middle
School is for picking up children riding other district busses. If your child needs to ride another district bus,
please be aware that CCS is charged a fee (approx. $500/student) from the district for each student that rides a
district bus. Please return the enclosed bus survey form to Sandra before August 27th, or the first day of
school.

Required Forms (see checklist)
In addition to reports, we are sending home required release and medical information forms that must be
returned by the first day of the school year – August 27th. Each year we update our information to keep it
current. So even if you filled out these forms last year, we need you to complete and return them to school again
this year. Students are not allowed to participate in outdoor education or field trips without this current
information. A Photo Opt-Out Form is also enclosed for new students and should be returned by those who do
NOT give permission for their student to appear in possible school district publicity images. For new 5th-8th
grade students, there is a student email permission form to create individual student RFSD email accounts that
will follow them into high school. For all students, there is also a computer and internet use form that needs
to be read and signed. For all students, an updated copy of your child’s immunization records must be on file
in the office. The state audits these records yearly, so your child’s shots must be up to date. Also included in the
registration packet is a Counseling Opt-Out Form. Please return this form if you do NOT give permission for
your child to receive counseling services from Amanda Smith, MSW.

Student Fees
The $538 student fee covers classroom supplies as well as transportation and activity expenses. Please see the
enclosed invoice for an explanation of fees and for payment.
If you have any questions, please call CCS at 970-963-9647 or email Sandra at sshafer@discovercompass.org.
I am looking forward to hearing about all your great adventures and to see how each student has grown over the
summer. Stay safe and have fun!

Sincerely,
Sam Richings-Germain
